Top 10 Film Federations of India – The Real Power Structure of Indian Cinema

Indian cinema is not one industry, it’s 20+ industries speaking different languages. What holds them together is the Federation System. If you want to produce, distribute, or send a film to the Oscars, you have to go through them.

Here is the forever list:

1. Film Federation of India (FFI) – The Apex Body

HQ: Mumbai | President: Abhay Sinha

This is the boss of all. The Film Federation of India is an apex body of the Indian film producers (around 18,000), distributors (around 20,000), exhibitors (around 12,000) and studio owners.

It has 42 film chambers from all over India as its constituents and is officially recognized by the I&B Ministry as the definitive film trade body. It is also internationally recognized and a member of FIAPF, the regulatory body of all important film festivals including Cannes.

Super Power: FFI selects the Indian official entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film each year.

2. Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE)

The workers union. 32 different craft unions – from spot boys to editors to dancers. If there is a strike in Bollywood, this is the body that calls it. Joined hands with PGI and IFTPC to support daily wage earners during COVID.

3. Indian Film & Television Producers Council (IFTPC)

Formerly AMPTPP. The main producers council for TV and film. Handles 90% of daily TV show producers. Very active in Mumbai.

4. Producers Guild of India (PGI)

The elite club. Members are top banners like Yash Raj Films, Dharma, Red Chillies, Excel. One of the three film federations that supported daily wage workers during lockdown along with IFTPC and FWICE.

5. Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA)

Oldest producers body (since 1937). Affiliated to Film Federation of India and FIAPF. It fights title registration – every Hindi film title must be registered here first.

6. South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC) – Chennai

The apex body for South – Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam. Controls lab, studio and distribution rules in South India.

7. Eastern India Motion Picture Association (EIMPA) – Kolkata

Controls Bengal, Odisha, Assam region. One of the oldest, formed in 1932. All Bengali films need its censor support.

8. Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce – Hyderabad

The most commercially powerful regional chamber after Mumbai. With Tollywood becoming Pan-India, its influence has doubled.

9. Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) – Bengaluru

Controls Kannada industry. After KGF 2 and Kantara, it now negotiates directly with national OTTs.

10. Punjabi Film Federation (PFF) – Mohali

The newest federation. At least 10 leading film and music production houses of Punjabi industry have come together to form Punjabi Film Federation including Rhythm Boyz, White Hill Studios, Omjee Group, and Ammy Virk Productions. This is the future model – regional industries forming their own federations.

Bonus: The Government Side

National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) – After 2020 merger, NFDC now includes Films Division, Directorate of Film Festivals, National Film Archives, and Children’s Film Society. It’s the government’s film body.

Bottom Line: If you are a filmmaker, you need 2 memberships: IMPPA for title + FFI constituent chamber for Oscar eligibility. And if you employ people, you need FWICE.
