Her childhood was nothing like Southfork. Tilton was raised by a single mother who suffered from mental illness, and money was scarce. She has said she was living on her own in an apartment from the age of 15.
Larry Hagman became the father figure she never had. She met Hagman while still in high school, years before being cast opposite him. On his death in November 2012, she wrote: “I grew up with a mentally ill single mother raising me and no father figure in my life… My Uncle Larry became the father figure that I so needed and longed for.”
She was just 17 when she was cast as Lucy Ewing. Dallas premiered in 1978 and turned her into an overnight global star, and by the early 1980s she was reportedly earning around $50,000 an episode.
Her first film role was opposite Jodie Foster. She played Bambi in Disney’s original Freaky Friday (1976), the same year she made her TV debut in Happy Days.
She had a cameo in a surfing classic. Tilton appears briefly as a party girl in John Milius’s Big Wednesday (1978).
