What Does PPM Mean?

One PPM means:

Different Types of PPM

PPM by Mass — ppmw

PPM by mass is often used for solids, powders, soil, food and chemical mixtures.

It may be expressed as:

PPM by Volume — ppmv

PPM by volume is commonly used for gases.

Some Lesser-Known Facts About PPM

  1. PPM is a ratio, not a substance. It describes the relative amount of a substance within a larger sample.
  2. The correct symbol is generally written as “ppm.” “PPM” is common in informal writing, but technical documents often use lowercase ppm.
  3. 1 ppm is one-millionth, not one-thousandth. One-thousandth is 0.1%, equal to 1,000 ppm.
