India Creates World-Class Genetic Map of Arhar (Tur Dal) – Big Boost for Farmers and Food Security

Indian scientists have achieved a major breakthrough that could help the country grow better, stronger and more nutritious arhar (tur dal) in the coming years.

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has successfully created India’s first complete and high-quality genetic map (called a telomere-to-telomere or T2T reference genome) of the popular arhar variety known as ‘Asha’. This is the first time India has produced such a fully detailed genetic blueprint of any pulse crop.

Why This Matters

Arhar (tur) is one of India’s most important sources of protein. Millions of people eat it regularly, and farmers across the country depend on it for their income. However, the crop is often affected by drought, pests, diseases and climate changes, which reduce production.

With this new complete genetic map, scientists can now:

  • Identify useful genes more accurately
  • Develop new arhar varieties that give higher yield
  • Create plants that can better tolerate drought, heat and pests
  • Improve the nutritional quality of the dal

In simple words, this scientific tool will help breed better seeds faster and more precisely than before.

Building on Earlier Success

This is not the first time Indian scientists have worked on the arhar genome. In 2011, the same institute (ICAR-National Institute for Plant Biotechnology, New Delhi) published the world’s first draft genome of any pulse crop. An improved version came in 2017. Now, in 2026, they have completed the full and most accurate version.

The new genome contains detailed information about all 11 chromosomes of the plant and more than 36,000 genes. It has been submitted to the global scientific database so researchers worldwide can use it.

This development supports the Government of India’s Mission for Self-Reliance in Pulses (Aatmanirbharta in Pulses). The mission aims to increase pulse production to about 35 million tonnes by 2030–31, reduce imports, and improve farmers’ incomes.

For farmers, better seeds mean higher yields and more stable income even in difficult weather.
For consumers, it can mean more affordable and nutritious dal in the long run.
For the country, it strengthens food security and reduces dependence on imported pulses.

Scientists, breeders and agricultural universities will now use this genetic map as a foundation for future research and variety development.

This achievement marks an important step in India’s agricultural science and shows how advanced research can directly benefit farmers and the common people.
