Gangtok, August 4, 2026 — A special meeting of Panchayat members was held in Soreng District today to explain a new government scheme aimed at providing employment and livelihood opportunities in rural areas.
What is this scheme?
The scheme is called Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Aajeevika Mission (Grameen), popularly known as VB-G RAM-G.
In simple words, it is a government programme designed to:
- Guarantee employment opportunities for rural people
- Help create sustainable sources of livelihood
- Improve village infrastructure and assets
It focuses on strengthening the role of Gram Panchayats (village local bodies) so that development plans are made according to local needs.
What happened at the meeting?
The District Panchayat Sammelan was held in Soreng District and was chaired by Zilla Upadhyaksha Shri C.B. Shankar.
Officials and representatives present included:
- Zilla Panchayat and Gram Panchayat members of Soreng District
- Shri Ongdi Sherpa, Additional District Collector (Development)
- Officers from the Rural Development Department
- Engineers, Gram Rozgar Sahayaks and other staff
Shri Deepak Rai, Joint Secretary of the scheme from the Rural Development Department, gave a detailed presentation. He explained the objectives of the mission, its main features, and the important role of Gram Panchayats in implementing it.
Other presentations covered:
- The Viksit Gram Panchayat Plan (how villages should prepare development plans)
- Planning, convergence of different schemes, and how funds will flow
What did the leaders say?
Shri Ongdi Sherpa, ADC (Development), stressed that all Gram Panchayats and government departments must work together closely for the success of the mission.
Zilla Upadhyaksha Shri C.B. Shankar appealed to all Panchayat members to clearly understand the scheme. He asked them to prepare plans with the participation of villagers, focusing on creating useful community infrastructure and long-term livelihood assets.
The meeting ended with an interactive session where participants asked questions and clarified their doubts. The programme was coordinated by Shri Satyan Thapa, ADPC of Soreng District.
Why is this important?
Many rural areas still face challenges of unemployment and lack of basic facilities. Schemes like VB-G RAM-G aim to give people work opportunities closer to home while also improving roads, water facilities, and other village assets. Meetings like this help local elected representatives understand the scheme properly so that benefits reach the people effectively.
