Why 7 August is National Handloom Day

National Handloom Day is observed every year on 7 August to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement on this day in 1905. The movement encouraged people to use Indian-made handloom cloth and reject foreign goods. The day aims to:

  • Highlight the importance of the handloom sector
  • Promote traditional weaving skills
  • Improve the livelihoods of weavers
  • Encourage the public to buy handloom products

This will be the 12th observance of the day since it was officially declared in 2015.

District Collector Durgamoorthi has appealed to the public to participate in large numbers, purchase handloom products, and support the weavers of the district.
