Lunglei: Major Jail Scam Exposed – 17 Convicts Released Using Forged Documents

Lunglei, May 9, 2026 – Mizoram Police have uncovered a serious case of document forgery and illegal release of convicts from Lunglei District Jail.

According to a press release issued by the Mizoram Police Media Cell today, the scam came to light after District & Sessions Judge Pi R. Lalduhawmi lodged an FIR with Lunglei Police Station on April 27, 2026.

How the Scam Was Detected

On April 24, 2026, two under-trial prisoners (UTPs) — Malsawmtluanga and Dokapthanga — appeared in court with fake documents claiming they had been granted release on a discharge bond with a fine of Rs 50,000. However, the judge found that both had already attended a court hearing on April 23 and their next hearing was scheduled for May 8. This raised suspicion, leading to immediate investigation.

Shocking Revelations

Police investigation revealed a well-organised racket in which 17 convicts, including those convicted in serious cases such as POCSO, ND&PS (drugs), and theft, were illegally released from Lunglei District Jail between January 30 and March 18, 2026, using forged court orders and documents.

Key Accused

  • Jeremia Lalthangtura (25), s/o James Lalzawmmawia, Zemabawk, Berawlui Veng, Aizawl (currently in Lunglei District Jail)
  • C. Laltlanhlua (31), s/o C. Lalbiaksanga, Republic Vengthlang, Aizawl (ambulance driver)

Both were arrested on May 1, 2026, and remanded to judicial custody on May 7.

Modus Operandi

Jeremia allegedly approached convicts and their families, promising to help them get released by filing fake appeals in higher courts. He charged between Rs 4,000 to Rs 50,000 per person. The total amount collected so far is around Rs 1.35 lakh.

Using computers at a printing shop in Rahsi Veng and the District Jail office itself, Jeremia forged court orders and documents. C. Laltlanhlua assisted by obtaining official-looking letterheads and delivering the fake documents to jail authorities, who released the prisoners based on these forged papers.

Current Status

  • 11 convicts have been re-arrested and sent back to jail.
  • One convict has absconded.
  • Others are being traced.
  • Investigation is ongoing to identify all involved parties.

Police have seized the computers and printers used in the forgery and sent them for forensic examination.

This is a serious breach of jail security and judicial process. Further arrests and recoveries are expected as the investigation continues.
