He Googled a UPI Number to Get ₹5,500 Refund, Lost ₹81,360 Instead

A senior citizen in Gorwa, Vadodara. His UPI transaction failed. He wanted a refund of ₹5,500.

So what did he do? What we all do.

He Googled “UPI customer care number.”

And that’s where the trap started.

How The Scam Happened:

  1. He called the number that appeared on top of Google. The person on the other side said, “Yes, I am from UPI customer care, I will give you your ₹5,500 refund.”
  2. Then the scammer called him on WhatsApp. He sent an unknown UPI ID and said, “This is the refund process, just enter your UPI PIN.”
  3. The senior citizen thought – refund lene ke liye PIN dalna hoga. He entered his PIN.
  4. The second he entered the PIN, ₹81,360 was debited from his SBI account. He checked it on the YONO app and realized he was cheated.

He immediately contacted the bank and filed a complaint on 1930 – the cyber helpline. Gorwa Police has started investigation with technical surveillance.

Why This Happens Every Day:

Google does not verify customer care numbers. Anyone can create a website or an ad with “UPI Customer Care Number” and put it on top of Google search.

When you search, you see a fake number. You call it, and the scammer already knows you are desperate for a refund.

And the golden rule of UPI that everyone forgets:

You NEVER need to enter your UPI PIN to RECEIVE money. UPI PIN is only for SENDING money.

The moment someone says “refund ke liye PIN dalo” – it’s a scam. 100%.

What To Do Instead:

  1. Never Google UPI / PhonePe / Google Pay customer care numbers. Open your UPI app itself – PhonePe, GPay, BHIM – the Help section inside the app has the real support option.
  2. For SBI, only use the number on the back of your debit card or the YONO app.
  3. If a transaction fails, the money comes back automatically in 3-5 days. No one needs your PIN for it.
  4. If you are scammed, immediately call 1930 – the National Cyber Crime helpline – and also report on cybercrime.gov.in. The faster you report, the higher the chance of freezing the money.

This senior citizen lost ₹81,360 for a ₹5,500 refund that never existed.

The fraud is not sophisticated. It just uses our one habit – Googling everything.
