YES BANK VISA Multi Currency Travel Card: Your Complete Guide

Traveling abroad involves a maze of currency exchange, transaction fees, and security concerns. The YES BANK VISA Multi Currency Travel Card (MCTC) is designed to simplify all of that. This pre-paid card can be loaded with multiple foreign currencies, locking in exchange rates before you travel and potentially saving you significant money.

This comprehensive guide breaks down the card’s official FAQ into easy-to-digest sections, providing you with everything you need to know to use it confidently on your next international trip.

Part 1: The Basics – What It Is & How to Get It

What is the YES BANK VISA MCTC?
It’s a foreign currency-denominated prepaid card. You load it with money in India (paying in INR) and can use it abroad to shop online, swipe at stores, or withdraw cash from ATMs—just like a regular Visa debit or credit card, but often with lower fees.

Key Benefits:

  • Lock in Rates: Load currency before you travel to avoid rate fluctuations.
  • Multi-Currency Wallet: Hold up to 10 major currencies on one card.
  • Security: Chip and PIN protection, plus complimentary insurance against fraud/theft (up to ₹7 lakhs).
  • Cost-Effective: Avoids the high foreign transaction fees typically charged by regular international credit/debit cards.

Eligible Currencies:
You can load your card with these 10 currencies: US Dollar (USD), British Pound (GBP), Euro (EUR), Canadian Dollar (CAD), Australian Dollar (AUD), Singapore Dollar (SGD), UAE Dirham (AED), Japanese Yen (JPY), Saudi Riyal (SAR), and Thai Baht (THB).

Who Can Get It & How?

  • Eligibility: You must have confirmed international travel plans. Proof (like a visa or ticket) will be verified.
  • How to Apply: Visit your nearest YES BANK branch with your KYC documents (Passport, PAN, visa, tickets).
  • Planning Ahead: You can purchase foreign exchange and load the card up to 60 days before your departure.

Part 2: Using Your Card – Transactions, Limits & Smart Tips

Activation & First Use:
Your card is activated once it’s loaded. You’ll receive a welcome email/SMS. You can start using it immediately for purchases and ATM withdrawals.

How to Use Your Card:

  1. At Shops (Merchant Outlets):
    • Chip & PIN: Insert your card, enter your 4-digit PIN when prompted.
    • Contactless (Tap & Pay): For small amounts, simply tap your card on NFC-enabled terminals. You may need your PIN for larger amounts.
    • Always select “Credit Card” as the payment type at the terminal.
  2. At ATMs:
    • Use ATMs with the Visa logo.
    • Select your account as “Checking,” “Current,” or “Credit.”
    • CRITICAL: If the ATM asks about currency conversion, ALWAYS CHOOSE “WITHOUT CONVERSION” or “WITHDRAW IN LOCAL CURRENCY.” This avoids costly “Dynamic Currency Conversion” (DCC) fees.
  3. Online Purchases:
    • Select “Credit Card” as the payment method.
    • Enter your card details. You will receive a One-Time Password (OTP) on your registered Indian mobile number to authorize the transaction.
    • Always set the “Billing Currency” and “Billing Country” to the local currency and country of the website.

Understanding Transaction Scenarios & DCC:
The card is “intelligent.” If you shop in Europe and have Euros loaded, it uses that balance. If you don’t have Euros, it will automatically use funds from another wallet (following a set priority order: USD > GBP > EUR > etc.), applying a cross-currency conversion fee.

The #1 Rule to Save Money: AVOID DCC.

  • What is DCC? Dynamic Currency Conversion is when a foreign ATM or shop offers to charge you in Indian Rupees (INR). DECLINE THIS. The exchange rate they use includes a huge markup.
  • Your card is programmed to decline DCC transactions, but always double-check at ATMs and on payment slips that the transaction is in the local currency, not INR.

Daily Limits:
Check the latest “Schedule of Charges” on YES BANK’s website for daily spending (POS) and cash withdrawal limits at ATMs.

The primary way to manage your card is through the Prepaid Card Self Care Portal.

  • Portal Login: https://yesbankcust.yappay.in/login
  • First-Time Login:
    1. Enter your Passport Number in the “Customer ID” field.
    2. Click “Forgot Password.”
    3. Complete the OTP verification sent to your registered mobile number.
    4. Set your 4-digit web portal password.
  • What You Can Do on the Portal:
    • Check currency-wise balances.
    • View and download transaction statements.
    • Lock/Unlock your card instantly if misplaced.
    • Reset your ATM PIN (it will be emailed to you).
    • Change your web portal password.

You will also receive SMS and email alerts for all loads, reloads, and transactions. These are free for Indian numbers.

Your PINs:

  • ATM/POS PIN: This is the 4-digit PIN for physical transactions. You will receive it in your welcome kit. You can reset it for free via the Self Care Portal if forgotten.
  • PIN Blocking: After 3 incorrect PIN attempts, the PIN is blocked for 24 hours (or until midnight) for security.

What to Do in Case of Problems:

  1. Lost or Stolen Card:
    • IMMEDIATELY log into the Self Care Portal and LOCK your card.
    • Alternatively, call Yes Touch Phone Banking (numbers are on the back of your card and listed in Part 5) to report it.
    • The complimentary insurance (up to ₹7 Lakhs) covers fraudulent transactions on lost/stolen cards.
  2. Transactions Are Declined:
    • Check your balances on the portal to ensure you have sufficient funds in any currency wallet.
    • Ensure you are not in a restricted country (see Part 4).
    • Call Yes Touch Phone Banking for assistance.
  3. Dispute a Transaction:
    • If you see a charge you don’t recognize, lock your card via the portal immediately.
    • Call Yes Touch Phone Banking to raise a dispute.

Pre-Authorization Holds (Hotels & Car Rentals):
Hotels and car rentals often place a temporary “hold” (pre-auth) on your card for an estimated amount.

  • At checkout, ask them to settle the final bill against that original pre-auth.
  • If they can’t, ensure they cancel the old pre-auth and charge the actual amount in a new transaction.
  • Unclaimed pre-auths are automatically released back to your card after 30 days.

Part 4: Rules, Reloads & Refunds

Where You CANNOT Use the Card:

  • In India, Nepal, or Bhutan for foreign currency transactions.
  • In UN-sanctioned or high-risk countries (e.g., Iran, North Korea, Sudan, etc.). The list is updated periodically by the bank.
  • For purchasing prohibited items like cryptocurrencies, lottery tickets, or banned magazines.

Reloading Your Card:
If you run out of funds while abroad:

  • A family member can visit the YES BANK branch where you purchased the card with a signed and filled Reload Application Form to add more money.
  • The reload must comply with RBI’s Liberalized Remittance Scheme (LRS) limits.

Refunds & Unused Balance After Your Trip:

  • Retaining Currency: Upon return, you can keep up to USD 2000 (or equivalent) in foreign currency. Any amount above this must be surrendered.
  • Getting a Refund: After returning to India, visit any YES BANK branch (not necessarily your issuing branch). Submit a signed refund form and a copy of your passport to convert the unused balance back to INR. GST and other charges will apply.
  • Expired/Hotlisted Card with Balance: You can still apply for a refund at a branch or request a replacement card to access the funds.

Regulatory Compliance:
All usage and loading must adhere to RBI’s Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) guidelines. The card is strictly for legitimate travel expenses.
